In December 2008, the Unites States DOI, through U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and The National Park Service, announced the final change to rules to carrying firearms in national parks and wildlife refuges. The change will finally restore the right of law-abiding gun owners to carry concealed firearms for lawful purposes on most Department of Interior lands, laws of the states in which these public lands are located must be followed . Existing regulations regarding the carrying of firearms remain otherwise unchanged, particularly limitations on poaching and target practice and prohibitions on carrying firearms in federal buildings.
This new rule, which took effect Monday January 12 2009, it will allow Right-to-Carry permit owners to carry concealed firearms in national parks and wildlife refuges ,but only in states that recognize their permits and only if, the individual is authorized to carry a concealed weapon under state law in the state in which the national park or refuge is located. The new rule will also put an end to the various regulations that governed different pieces of lands managed by a handful different federal agencies. In the past, lands managed by Department of Interior did not allow firearms ,while the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service lands did allow the carrying of firearms .
