America's Affordable Health Choices Act

The Energy and Commerce Committee narrowly passed the measure by a 31-28 vote, after a compromise was made between liberal and conservative Democrats. The Democrat's plan will be to spend more than $2 trillion over ten years ,and further increase our overextending deficit. The President calls this a "Historic Step" and had high praises for the bill.
I have been opposed to a Government run health care do to the concerns that it will run quality Health Care out the window, for a watered down version that most employers will opt for all because new regulations would not apply just to individual insurance plans, but to all insurance plans. During the election Obama ran on the promise that he would ensure that all Americans would get the quality insurance that Senators and employees of the Government receive. Can we afford that ? NO!! Americans are constantly trusting Government with giant decisions and with a bill that is 1017 pages long ? Why should we trust Government to create a new Government health care program and reform health care when Medicaid and Medicare are not properly funded or properly run.
How will this effect Oregon ?
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Current Population Survey. Annual Social and Economic Supplements, March 2007 : 17% of Oregonians do not have insurance . That does not appear to be startling number but in reality amounts to over 600,000 people including 116,000 children, some of the uninsured already qualify for Medicare and OHP and choose to not do so . Health insurance premiums for a working family on average amount to over 13,000 dollars. OHP Standard premiums range from nine dollars to twenty dollars a month and covers access to physician services, prescription drug coverage, emergency/urgent hospital services, lab and X-ray services and a range of other services, but only limited dental, durable medical equipment, home/parenteral, hospital and vision services. They have no services for acupuncture; chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation; hearing aids; home health; non-emergency medical transportation; occupational therapy; physical therapy; private duty nursing; speech and language therapy. They have no vision services for frames, lenses, contacts to correct vision or eye exams. The cost of health care in Oregon has risen 102% since 2000 according to AHRQ and all classes of families feel the pinch. Small businesses amount to almost 80% of businesses in Oregon ,but only half even offer health insurance and that is because next to employee wages health insurance makes up the second largest expense .
With lobbyist spending over 1 million dollars a day trying to influence us and congress it is hard to see past the fog. It is not clear what was changed in the massive bill to get it passes but Republicans are concerned as well as some in the other parties.
