Voting for Commissioner Position #1 is going to be a little confusing Tuesday, May 18 there are now ten men and one woman up for that one seat . You will notice is that a lot of the same names are giving it another go-round. Dale Matthews, Ed Bowers, Jonathan Lesh, Eric Gade, Jadd Horban, Tony Paulson, Simon Hare , Mark Seligman,Dave Toler,Jack Brown and Rycke Brown. Yes the last name is very familiar with Grants Pass residents and local police or maybe you know her as the pot cookie lady and pro-marijuana protester on the corner of G and 6th who would like to see a sale tax on everything except medicine and food . Then Dave Toler who is running for re-election , Jadd Horban former police officer ,Jack Brown career candidate and Auto Doc, Dale Mathews who ran unsuccessful for treasurer and has been a friendly and familiar face at city council meetings . The next scheduled debate is April 20 at the Anne Basker Auditorium in Grants Pass.

What's confusing? You've got one person who is qualified to manage the county and has proven himself time and time again. Commissioner Toler has brought over 100 jobs to the county in the last year alone, has saved the county $800,000 through fiscal management alone, has saved us another $125,000 a year in energy costs (not to mention the $1.3 he secured in federal stimulus money) and gave us back our law enforcement, jail beds and libraries and improved our parks.
One of the other 2 viable candidates is an auto mechanic who has no qualifications or experience to run anything but a mobile mechanic service (if that.) He says that if your next door neighbor wants to put in a pig farm or a trash dump, he should be able to do whatever he wants with his property, no matter how it infringes upon your own property rights. Nice guy. And that's one of the "saner" things he's known for.
The other viable candidate is a slick-talking empty suit from Washington DC who has yet to name one single solitary accomplishment or qualification for the job.
Although I will say this... the DC candidate is really good at spouting political rhetoric and talking out of both sides of his mouth at the same time. Like when he says we should run our county just like Douglas and Jackson counties, who have tax rates 2 times and 4 times higher than ours, but then says we don't need to raise taxes. How dumb does he really think we are???
The other 8 candidates will never make it past the primary, and it's a good thing, since NONE of them have a lick of management experience. Snd that's what this job is all about; managing the county and providing county services to the citizens of Josphine county.
You may or may not like Toler - but you have to agree - he gets the job done and keeps the county running. And there is no way I would trust a 105 million dollar budget to any of these other Cassanelli wannabe's who are just looking for a 4-year paycheck.
"Cassanelli wannabe's who are just looking for a 4-year paycheck."
Excuse me, there are some that are there to actually make a difference and not just a puppet of their party. People are tired of "Big Government" and Toler is no different than the other slick-talking empty suit from Washington DC that you spoke of.
You forgot one viable candidate that isn't on any parties take and was a finance manager for a company that dealt in millions monthly! He is one of the "other 8 candidates will never make it past the primary, and it's a good thing, since NONE of them have a lick of management experience" even though he owns and manages his own business. I for one am just plain tired of politicians on the take. Integrity means more to me than how much propaganda a politician can buy (I received a Toler party invite in the mail).I have done my homework and I am actually surprised that I am voting for a "young guy". And that would be Jadd Horban. link titleYou can keep your Big Government politicians, I'm voting for a real person with brains, common sense and the actual commitment to the people.
I'm honored to be the one candidate you had something to say about. You forgot to mention that I want to trade our job-killing permit fees, SDCs, road improvement fees, and supplementary property tax levies for the sales tax that I propose. Fees can't pay for more than the salaries of the planners and the work that they are dedicated to. Supplemental tax levies don't work well for funding public safety salaries.
I'm the only candidate with any real plan to fund this county's public safety when the federal money runs out, and it will allow more private-sector job creation in the process.
Live free, and prosper.
Rycke
