Are Hispanics Facing An Economic Apocalypse? And how can the GOP help to solve the crisis?
According to the 2010 U.S. Census, there are more than 50 million Latinos in America. That is larger than the entire national populations of Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Costa-Rica Cuba combined. Now consider the total number of Hispanic voters this last year reached a record 23.7 million and that is up about 80% since 2000. In addition, for the first time they represented 10% of the total electorate. And this last November they showed the GOP that they have simply become too numerous to ignore.
Hispanics voted for Obama over Mitt Romney by a whopping 71% to 27% and put Obama over the top in several swing states. Obama also improved his vast winning margin amongst Latino voters and gained 69% of total Hispanic votes in the 2012 election.
Now that the election is over the GOP is left scratching their heads looking for the reason why they lost. Well, it is a simple answer if you look at the data... Hispanics want more jobs, affordable health care, access to higher education and immigration reform, and they believe that Obama will grant their wishes and hear their cries. Furthermore, it didn't hurt that Hispanic celebrities almost ensured Obama's validity within their tight-knit community. Now with that said, what can the GOP do to earn the trust of the Latino population? Well for starters they can listen to the 23.7 million Latino voters. Start to address the growing joblessness among the Latino community, strengthen education and work on health care reform. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Hispanics have seen their work force grow by more than 4 million people from January 2009 to May 2012. Currently the job market is failing to keep pace with population growth and is leaving large shares of Latino as well as Black job seekers without jobs. The current situation is looking like an "Economic Apocalypse" for Latino and Black communities, and it has not even be acknowledged or addressed by the President. Here are some numbers to consider -- Latino unemployment is 40 percent greater than that of whites and unemployment for African-Americans is 100 percent higher. Though unemployment is a concern among most Americans, for Latino and Black Millennials ages 18-29 the situation is even worse, one in five young Latinos is unemployed and one out of three young African Americans is out of work. In some cities across America, almost 50 percent of youth of color can’t even find a job. Republicans need the Hispanic voter, according to the Pew Hispanic Center 40 million Hispanics will be eligible to vote by 2030, likewise they will account for 40% of the growth in the eligible electorate by 2030. Obama has failed to do anything about their unemployment that which has remained above 9% his entire term. Since Obama is failing them, the GOP can address this in their own communities by working with small businesses to create more jobs. Joblessness in any community whether Hispanic, black or white is bad for everyone. The GOP holds more power than they think. They might not have the presidency, but they do have millions of hard-core tea drinking voters who want to see America recover.
