The White House is weighing a far broader approach to curbing U.S. gun violence than just reinstating a expired ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
A gun control task force led by Vice President Joe Biden is seriously considering measures that would require universal background checks for gun buyers and track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database.
The measures would also create new mental health checks and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors. The approach is backed by law enforcement leaders.
Now keep in mind that from 2005 through 2011, more people in the U.S. were killed with hammers and clubs, or with hands and fists, than with rifles, which is what the ban likely would have the most effect on, reports Awr Hawkins on Breitbart.com.
According to FBI records there were 496 murders committed with hammers or clubs in 2011, as compared with 323 deaths connected to a rifle. In 2006, there were 618 killings committed with a hammer or club, and 438 murders with a rifle. Looking at the reports you will see that over the years, twice as many people were killed with hands and fists than with rifles.
