Public schools usually start sex education around the the age of 10, but sex education will be taught to Chicago kindergartners within two years as part of a new policy adopted by Chicago's public schools sexual health program. Chicago currently is the third-largest public school system in the country, with around 431,000 students. For the first time in Chicago, sex-ed instruction will cover sexual orientation and gender identity. The policy calls for 300 minutes of instruction or about 30 minutes per month, beginning in kindergarten. Kindergartners will learn the basics about anatomy, reproduction, healthy relationships and personal safety. Third grade lessons will focus on family dynamics, feelings and appropriate and inappropriate touching. Fourth grade students will start learning about puberty, and HIV and how the virus is transmitted. Fifth through the 12th grade, the emphasis will be on reproduction, the prevention of HIV/AIDS, and other STD's , peer bullying and contraception. All students will learn definitions and terms associated with sexual identity, including those related to LGBT populations, in an effort to bring awareness, promote tolerance and prevent bullying. Parents or guardians of students can opt out of the sexual health education program if they choose to do so.
GOALS OF CPS SEX-ED PROGRAM:
• Demonstrate respect for people with different sexual values.
• Exercise democratic responsibility to influence legislation dealing with sexual issues.
• Assess the impact of family, cultural, media, and societal messages on one’s thoughts, feelings, values, and behaviors related to sexuality.
• Critically examine the world around them for biases based on gender, sexual orientation, culture, ethnicity, and race.
• Promote the rights of all people to accurate sexuality information.
• Avoid behaviors that exhibit prejudice and bigotry.
• Reject stereotypes about the sexuality of different populations.
• Educate others about sexuality.
Things to note:
Sex-ed was previously only required for students in grades six through 12.
Only 52.5 % of 3rd through 8th graders in Chicago’s Public Schools meet or exceeded reading and math standards in 2012/2013.
