Oregon Measures

Update on Oregon measures . In November we Oregonians had numerous measures to read through and vote on. If you didn't vote please don't complain .

Measure 56
Amends constitution to exempt elections in May and November of any year from 50% voter turnout requirement for passage of property tax increase measures . (PASSED YES 57%)

Measure 57

Would increase sentences for repeat offenders. Includes drug treatment.Estimated cost 411 million dollars over 5 years ,state will borrow 314 million dollars for prison construction. (PASSED YES 61%)

Measure 58

Prohibits teaching a student in a language other than English for more than 2 years.
(FAILED NO 56%)


Measure 59

Allows the full amount of federal taxes paid to be deducted from Oregon income taxable income. (FAILED NO 64%)

Measure 60

Requires that public schools teachers pay and job security be based on classroom performance and not on seniority (FAILED NO 62%)

Measure 61

Sets mandatory minimum sentences for burglary ,dealing drugs and identification theft would have $1.3 billion dollar impact . (FAILED No 51%)

Measure 62
Would amend Constitution to allocate 15% of lottery revenues to public safety and law enforcement .(FAILED NO 61%)

Measure 63

Exempts farm and residential properties improvement projects valued $35,000 or less from state and local building permit requirements (FAILED NO 54%)

Measure 64

Prohibits the use of a "public resource" to collect money for a "political purpose" (FAILED NO54%)

Measure 65

Abolishes partisan primary elections and establishes an "open primary" in which the top two candidates advance to general election . ( FAILED NO 66%)

I personally do not agree with the majority of voters on some of the measures ,but it was democracy at its finest . I also did NOT vote for Obama and I also would have preferred a REPUBLICAN senator .
