May Special Election

Ballots are in the mail for the over two million registered voters in Oregon. if you have not received your ballot by May 8th contact the County Clerks office at (541) 474-5240 . The ballot will include a public safety measure ,the levy would be for two year as compared to a similar four year levy that failed in November . The money raised from the levy $1.79 per $1,000 of assessed property value would go to maintaining a similar safety level, as it is not intended to increase staff. If the levy does not pass there will be cuts to public safety ,27 will lose there jobs including 8 full time police officers and 7 firefighters . Grants Pass will also be required to pay back a 250,000 grant if the levy fails ,the grant was used to hire firefighters . The New Redwood Fire Station could also close if the levy fails. City workers are Union and there are talks that if the unions do not agree to a shorter work week there could be a pink slip for at up to twenty one workers. If the levy fails the kids in the county might not have Caveman public pool - and NO public safety officers for the Boatnik Parade- Carnival or Back To The Fifties events .Also the Woman's crisis team might lose public funding . The old levy of $1.49 will expire this summer . With the rate of inflation these days a mere .30 cents per $1,000 seems fare.
