Five States With Tough ID Laws
Democrats and the ACLU are calling it disenfranchisement, Republicans are saying the new laws are to prevent voter fraud. Whatever side you are on, make sure you have current photo ID on election day.
According to Pennsylvania's new photo ID law, anyone who casts a provisional ballot is required to "appear in person at the county board of elections" within six days of the vote to provide proof that their ballot was valid. In order to prove that your ballot is valid, you must show up to the Election Office with a valid photo ID or Drivers Licence. A replacement Pennsylvania driver's license costs $36. If you can not afford the fees to pay for a replacement ID or Drivers Licence you can sign an affirmation that you are indigent and not able to afford the fees associated with acquiring a photo ID.
In Georgia 11% or 66,515 of eligible voters say they lack current government-issued photo IDs or Drivers Licences. In Georgia you will need to bring a photo ID or driver's licence with you. If you do not bring current ID you will have to vote with a provisional ballot. To verify that your provisional ballot is legit, you will have only two days to present appropriate photo ID at your county registrar's office. Keep in mind that these facilities are often only open part time. However, the good news is that Georgia has a free photo ID initiative. So go to the website and find out more or head to your local registrars office and find out how to get one today. You do not want to be in line on election day or the following day. It could get messy, and your ballot might not count.
For a number of years in Tennessee, any identification card allowed you to vote. But the state's new voter ID law, not just any document will be sufficient. There are some 230,000 Tennesseans that possess driver's licenses that don't have photos on them. Can you believe that? NON-PHOTO ID'S OR DRIVERS LICENCES will not be accepted at polling places in November. If you arrive at the polling station and do not have photo ID poll workers will tell you that you can cast a provisional ballot on Election Day. However, you'll only have until "the close of business on the second business day after the election" to find an applicable piece of identification and present it to a designated elections official. The great news is... Tennessee has a new and free photo ID program. Do not miss out on this opportunity; you need a photo ID to vote. If you are a registered voter and do not have a government-issued photo ID, the Department of Safety and Homeland Security will provide you with a photo ID at no charge. Note student ID's are not valid!
Kansas
If you live in Kansas and your licence or photo ID expired IT IS NOW INVALID according to the state's new voter ID law. If you decide to vote, you will be given a provisional ballot and allowed to vote. You will then be told that you must now provide a valid form of identification to the county election officer in person or provide a copy by mail or electronic means before the meeting of the county board of canvassers. Keep in mind that you will have to make a trip to a state office during working hours to obtain a new licence or photo ID. You will also have to pay any fees in doing so. (Kansans over the age of 65 can use expired IDs).
Indiana
Without valid photo ID in Indiana you don't get to pull the lever aka vote. Under Indiana's new photo ID law, you will be required to fill out a provisional ballot. After you fill out your ballot you will need to verify it, this entails a visit to the county elections board during business hours. You will have to show a current photo ID or Drivers Licence- so if you don't have it your vote won't count. Word from the wise- Make sure you get proper identification before going to the polling station. Make sure you keep it safe until you go.
